Hello!
It’s me, Lauren, a writer/social media manager with a lot to say about being online (and why it really isn’t that deep. Trust me.)
You may have noticed that Things To Note is no more. She had her time, it was fun, but now that time is up. The ship has sailed. I realised that I just wasn’t feeling motivated to write the newsletter, so something had to change - and then came the idea for Not That Deep, born from my love of Substack creators who deep dive (it’s a theme, apparently) into a specific topic.
The thing is, I do actually know some stuff that I think might be useful, contrary to what my negative inner voice tells me. The Substack newsletters that I engage with most are the ones that provide practical advice on stuff I need help with: mostly fashion and recipes, to be totally honest. I realised that in my day job, I spend all of my time helping creative people to be visible online, so why shouldn’t I share what I’ve learned with the people who are most interested in this kind of content?
As a freelancer, I primarily work with authors, podcasters, broadcasters, media personalities and experts, all of whom have one thing in common: a lack of time and headspace to be active on social media. They know that they want to use it as a tool to promote their work and by extension themselves, but it feels overwhelming and unattainable when they’re busy writing a new book or recording a podcast.
That’s where I come in - a fairy godmother of sorts, freeing up my clients’ precious time, keeping them visible, providing clarity on what they should be doing and saying online and sending supportive WhatsApp voicenotes when they’re most needed. In some cases I have full creative control and in others I am simply there to do the posting and suggest ideas.
It occurred to me that it might be helpful to share a different take on existing in the online space, whatever that might look like for you. What does an online presence look like as an individual? How can I build a community and find my people? How do I communicate my work? What if I’m just not into the idea of a ‘personal brand’ but I still want to be active?
I’m not about to start sprouting advice and tips on engagement and strategy and trends because honestly, that’s just not my vibe or my skillset: but what I can talk about is the art of showing up online, without taking it all too seriously.
Excitingly, I’m also introducing a paid subscriber option for the first time ever, which I hope to grow over time as a gorgeous community of people who want to chat about all things social. Free subscribers will receive one post every month in their inbox, the same frequency as when this newsletter was called Things To Note, while paid subscribers will get access to the full archive, plus weekly posts, lovely chats in the comments and a monthly ‘Deep Dive’ segment too. I will absolutely be adding more to this offering as I find my feet! It’s £4 per month but there’s a cheeky lil discount if you choose the yearly option.
I hope you’ll be able to join me on this journey of discovery!
Until next time,
Lauren x
